Brooklyn indie rock collective's high-energy ska track, out now, is already drawing critical praise

BROOKLYN, NY —Hot on the heels of "I Don't Care," a punk-leaning track in which "anger turns into action" (Foxfire Magazine), Brooklyn-based indie rock collective Metagirl & the Earth Passengers has released "Fire It Up," a high-energy ska-infused rocker in the tradition of The Specials and The English Beat.

Released July 10, 2026, "Fire It Up" is the second single from the band's upcoming four-song EP Trying to Chalk the Sun. Driven by an upbeat skank rhythm and a call-and-response chorus, "Fire It Up" refuses to give up when the world feels stubbornly broken. The song offers no easy comfort: "Don't get fed up," it implores. Things don't always get better — but sometimes they do.

The single made its radio debut on WFUV FM 90.7's New York Slice on July 9, and has since been played on Loud Women Radio in London. Early reviews have praised the track:

Metagirl & the Earth Passengers has been making noise in New York City since 2016, performing at some of the city's most respected independent venues including The Bitter End, Pete's Candy Store, Pianos, and Shrine. The collective's hook-driven songs tackle life, love, art and the occasional brush with quantum physics, earning comparisons to some of indie rock's most distinctive voices.

Trying to Chalk the Sun marks the band's most fully realized work to date and signals an exciting new chapter for a project that has spent nearly a decade finding its voice — and clearly found it.
